Weathering the post-election emotional storm

It's the day after the election and America's come down with the world's largest case of manic-depressive disorder. But with emotions still raw from the two-year-long hotly contested campaign, how are people supposed to behave now that it's over?

msnbc.com would like to know what you think

I am elated, with a mixture of chills and tears. Finally. Finally! YES WE CAN!

At the same time I am deeply saddened by the voices of anger and hatred that continue to show up on Newsvine political threads.

I hope today marks the beginning of healing for all Americans, for all world citizens.

May God help Barack Obama, and may God bless the human race.

I agree with Patty Walker, he is not a "black" man he is half white, pictures of his grandmother and grandfather we just in news.  Why is "black" america so elated?

Halle Berry is also half white and is always talking about her stuggles as a black woman and was ecstatic to be the first "black woman" to win an oscar, then she had a child with a beautiful white man????????

I supported McCain ....but knowing that the biggest American moron will be out of the Presidential drivers seat come January, keeps me from being depressed!

You have to be scared though.  Replacing a moron with a terrorist has to leave you wondering which is worse.  I guess we will all know the answer in four years, if not sooner.  After GW's and his cronies agenda, my future is pretty well shot.  So I am not going to worry about me, but I will worry about my daughters future.

Folks, the good ol' USA has survived Republican and Democratic presidents in the past and we will keep doing so. The same goes for Congress. ********** We, the people, hopefully voted on the issues, competency, and the direction we want our country to take. (Competency as is having the intelligence and common sense to be president or VP who may become president.) ********* Now we must go on with our lives...and have hope that our new president will do a good job.

We are ALL Americans and as a people we WILL survive! Peace, people.

Don't you think are being a bit dramatic. Take the words of McCain into consideration and move forward. Most of the country voted for him because they believe in him, because they want something new and positive. Maybe it's about time you stop hating him and learn what he is about- with a different view than you did during this whole race. Most of this country and all the countries around the world believe that he is the best leader- this is still your country. Stop dwelling and become a postive energy that this country needs. If it was the other way around I bet you would tell all the Obama supporters to get over it and move on..... so move on.... negativity won't help this country, it's already had too much of that!

              Jack,

I know how you feel. That's how I felt in 2004 when GWBush was re-elected. I remember at the time how I wondered how my Country would survive 4 more years. But we made it (barely). I hope you are able to move forward. Take heart that your Country has proved itself to be as perfect a democracy as is possible. Be gracious, and thoughtful. Look inside yourself and think about what you believe, and ask why. It's ok to be disappointed, but you should never think the grass is greener somewhere else, because we as Americans know better. Insist that the Republican party cleans itself up, and stops the divisive tactics that has worked in the past but blew up in their face this time.

Elzabth, no he is not being dramatic.  The problem is that we HAVE learned about Obama, and it scares the hell out of us.  Be a positive force this country needs??  How can I possibly be a positive force when everything I believe in is considered "extremist" by Obama and Biden and their congressional puppets?  How can I possibly be positive in a country that is embracing socialism and divisive policies?  Look at how Joe the Plumber was treated for simply questioning Obama.  Look at how any media who didn't embrace Obama was treated.  Look at how Obama and his minions want o silence dissenting voices by the "fairness" doctrine, which is aimed ONLY at conservative radio, not all media.  My family has worked for the last 12 years to pull ourselves up from being dirt poor, and when we finally get our heads above water, here comes Obama to push us back down again.  We are nowhere near the rapidly dropping wage considered "rich" (what was it last time, 120k?) but we don't want any Obama socialist welfare, and even so, I think Obama is a liar who will raise taxes, he's letting the Bush cuts expire which will raise our taxes more.  I'm tired of working and working and now to have it all be for naught.  I'm tired.

If you consider making a quarter of a million dollars just making it- then you have no clue. This won't effect the majority of the population and is only so it can strengthen our economy to allow people to spend and get things going- so everyone makes money! Don't you see.

I voted against Bush the last two times, and for 8 years I had to live with his policies... look where we are now. They didn't work. But, it's my country and the country voted for him (well, sort of) and I had to deal. To move on. Now it's our turn for a change. And the people chose that change. Maybe not you. But a majority of the people. And for a reason.

Yes taxes suck and I'm sorry for all of you who are making so much money will have to be taxed extra. But what about all the other great things in his plans, education, health care. It's no longer about I..I..I... it should be about we... and that's why we voted for him. Either you can be bitter for the next 4 years or you can move forward and believe that this country has made the right decision. If it hasn't, it's not like we haven't already had the worst president ever in history leading us for the last 8 years....

My flag has been upside down for the last 8 years,  get over it.  The next President of the Untied States of America is an intelligent,  thoughtful man.  George Bush had taken our Country into the gutter,  we have lost individual rights and he has ruined our reputation in this great World.  President Obama will restore our standing in the World,  improve the economy for the vast majority of Americans and will do so by working with the GOP.  So, get over yourself.... or leave.  We'll keep the light on for you so when you realize that you were wrong you can come home.

Remember, one party will win and one party will lose...any two party election. I can feel for the losers....whether in 2000, 2004, or 2008.

Nobody can win every time. Some people (of both parties) need to get over it when their candidate loses.

I'm a liberal, and I always thought that sentiment - 'Bush- Not My President' was a horrible thing to say. I was not proud of Bush, but I was proud to be an American regardless, and I wore my stars and stripes pin happily when visiting abroad.

However, the 1st Amendment does give us the right to say what we want. So I suppose we should be glad we are still free to do so. It brings to mind 'I disapprove of what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.'  Written by an English woman, yes, but still very apt.

Now it's the conservatives' turn to experience what progressives and liberals have been going through in this country for much of the last 14 years! This election marks the end of the republican party of Reagan and Bush, and if they want to remain as a viable and competetive party, they're going to have to move more to the center and tell the far right evangelicals they've been pandering to since 1980 to take a hike!

We have had a Democratically run House and Senete for the past 2 years.  That means tha if we have been suffering for the past 8 years, the Democratic party has done its fair share to contribute!  We can not lay all the blame at the feet of one man.  The reality is that we are the only Nation thathas successfully proven this system we have been using and put in place low these many years ago, can and has worked.  We are all forgetting or maybe have already forgotten that it can only work if we are a UNITED NATION.

We all need to put our now deeply rooted partisan aside and become a UNITED NATION again.  We have had Great Republican Presidents and we have had Great Democratic Presidents, NO ONE PARTY is any better than the other, what has made great presidents and prosperous times for America is when we have put aside, trying to prove that one party is better, smarter, more worthy and worked together as a Nation for all people.

Republican and Democrat are words now being spewed at each other with the same hatred, that has made a gulf between races, sexes and creeds.  It needs to end we all need to put down our arrogance that "we" are right and the "other" side is wrong, that "Left" or "Right" is the only way to go and find the middle ground that this Nation was built on, rediscover our American Pride, and build bridges that help, not valleys that destroy.   We have to lay down the stereo types that all Liberals are bleeding heart socialist, who what something for nothing, and all Conservativeses are racist, narrow minded people who care only for themselves, so that we can marry the GOOD from both sides to create the Strong America that we all want.  I am a Republican, I have many Democratic friends, I did not vote for Obama I do not believe in him.  But I do Believe in America, in the American system of checks and balances, and I believe in all of the people both Military and Civilian that have sacrificed and even died to make this country great!  It is those persons I believe in, we are larger than a single President, we are the American People, we are the Voice, we have the power to change.  If you not happy with the way things are, find out what you can do to help make the changes you believe in, but never forget to build bridges behind you so all persons can follow.

The Democrats had a majority of one...and that ONE was flip flop Leiberman. The Democrats could NOT stop a filibuster. Or a presidential veto. ******************* At the same time...ALL the politcians of BOTH parties share blame... It goes without saying....

There is always 2012 if the people do NOT like what Obama is doing.

I am very happy with the end result, but I feel very bad for Mr. McCain, who has sacrificed so much for this country, and has aspired for so long to be President. His time was 2000, and he should have had the opportunity then.  His coming up short on his ambition should be placed on the heads of all those republicans who mistreated him and rejected him back then. They effectively mind screwed this noble man and transformed him into the poor soul who could never be president.

All the folks who talk about wearing black and hanging the flag upside down, think about how you supported what was done to Mr. McCain 8 years ago. Don't blame Obama, he isn't responsible for the destruction of John McCain. Take a lesson, and insist that the Republican party cleans up its's act.

I think it is shameful that Hollywood liberals can buy an election.  How can anyone respect the process when it feel like a sellout.  If McCain had all the money the liberals poured into Obama's pocket, he would have done much better.  If Obama really wanted to fix the economy, why didn't he use the money to help the disadvantaged...i.e. his illegal immigrant aunt living in poverty!  If he doesn't care about family, how are we supposed to believe he will care about anyone else?

I didn't really care whether or not McCain won, to be quite honest. I just knew I didn't want Obama to win. I wan't to make the money that I deserve, and Obama's socialist policies are not going to allow for that. I want my parents to retire with the money that they have worked so hard for over the years. Obama will give all my tax dollars to those who have done nothing productive for my country, and I refuse to stand by and watch this happen. I am disgusted with the American people, and I am so glad that I will be able to laugh about their awful decisions soon enough.

We ALL have the right to the American dream.  Republicans just expect o attain it through hard work, not by the fruits of someone else's labor.  I live in Maine and have seen this state become Taxationland, and the Welfare State.  The system here is abused in horrible ways, so that those who choose not to work have more luxuries than those who DO work.  When you live through such abuse, and see hard working people get the shaft time and time again, you become bitter toward a liberal system, especially the extent of "spreading the wealth" that Obama advocates.  Don't judge until you are in the shoes of those of us who deal with this garbage day in and day out, and now are expected to dole out more and more.

You know, if I believe the Republicans were the "hard work" party I'd be a Republican. I think we share the same frustration with working hard and getting the shaft, but we seem to have a difference in who we feel is working against us. By the way, I am neither Republican nor Democrat. I chose to vote for the better person regardless of affiliation. If I vote for a person and they fail to live up to their promises, I tend to vote to fire them the next time.

I could have lived with McCain as president, but that was before Palin came along. Think long and hard if you find yourself leaning her way in 2012.

Sounds like Maine and New York share an equal lack of values.  I'm disgusted with how much of my hard earned money goes to people who have multiple generations on public assistance--with no plans to come off it anytime soon.  They'll even tell you it's a better deal for them--free everything. And don't think they don't have sources of income--a lot of them don't report money they're making under the table; I worked with a woman once who used to brag about how her sister knew how to "play the system".  It's a real "treat" to see them in line using food stamps, with their fur-trimmed leather coats, dripping with gold, then getting into their $40K Escalades.

"Spread the wealth" is about as insulting to the middle class as the golden parachutes these CEOs of failed companies are getting.  When are we going to elect someone who actually cares about the middle class--the people that really keep this country going?

You're on the ball, Christine and I couldn't agree more.  It's obvious that none of the individuals on this blog have ever lived in a "socialist" country.  I have!!  The population lives in desperate but quiet depression.  They work hard, ride the trains to work and pay 70% of it to their government to "disperse the wealth".  The alcholics and addicts are paid by the government so they don't have to steal to maintain their habit, thus reducing the crime rate.  Socialism is "soft Communism".  We are quietly and subverisivly headed there.  It's not any motivation to achieve or better ones self.  The government will pay you...you'll be feed, housed and medicated...and maybe educated, if you're motivated enough to get up and go to school.  While our Freedoms quietly go down the drain, those who work hard and achieve success will be milked dry.     It is sneeking up on us...believe me...and will happen.

Personally, I was adamantly against the war in Iraq before it started, and I've maintained that opinion through all these years. Obama was against the war from the beginning and spoke out against it publicly when it was not politically expedient to do so. He also knew, as I did, that the surge was another White House deception.

The death and mutilation of so many American troops and Iraqi civilians is outrageous, staggering, considering it was a war of lies.

I admire Obama's judgement on this war, which has been supported by the Iraq government and many military leaders, including Colin Powell. I support ending the war, ending the corruption of American dollars being "lost" in Iraq, and ending the idiocy of a dismal and embarrassing foreign policy. I want our troops more intelligently deployed, equipped, and taken care of when they come back home.

I am a business owner and a die hard republican. I was very angry last night but I am also a patriot and logical thinker. We have elected the next President of this country that I love, so I will back him 100% and hope that he starts fixing what is broken in a way that is best for the counrty not the party.

Brian - you are a perfect example of a good republican - the evil and hate of a few speaks so loud now that it is drowning out the voice of all of the good fair peace loving republicans who make up the majority of the party.  Hate will never win us anything.

So much hate for so-called welfare queens.... Why not turn some of that hate on the guys and gals at the top who lied, cheated, and stole....and ran Wall Street and banks into the ground? ********** As far as I am concerned a conniving crook is a conniving crook...poor or rich.

How about all the money lost in 401Ks, pension plans, stocks to fund retirement, etc.? Such worry about a so-called "socialist" president...when ordinary people have ALREADY taken what may be the biggest financial hit in decades.

Corporate "raider" or welfare "queen"....both are poison to the hardworking workers.

Colleen, you are beyond help if you seriously think the few at the bottom (who generally DO work but don't make enough to survive) are ANYWHERE NEAR the caliber of leeches at the top who have run 150 year old companies into the ground with their greed and malfeasance.  The majority of crooks responsible for this economic disaster have already cashed out, and are holed up somewhere nice and safe.  They don't care if your 401k gets trashed or if your parents die from lack of medication.  They don't buy american goods, they don't fuel the american economy.  They have done you no favors, yet you rush into their defense like a cornered bull.  Take a step back, get some fresh air, and take a good hard look at who has really been ruining this country for 8 years.  Quit listening to hannity and coulter, get some real news, preferably international, and actually do your homework on the topic.

Stu--I live in a city that is impoverished--not because there are not jobs, but because we have generations of people who not only suck the life blood out of us by living off of government assistance, but bring their family members from not-as-generous states to come her and reap the same benefits.  75% of my property taxes go to pay for public assistance.  YEAH--I don't have to list to Ann Coulter and Hannity to know where my tax money goes--I just have to drive a 5 miles away to see it first hand.

BTW, how about the 105 Billion of the 700 Billion that is going to the executives of these companies getting bailed out?  Wheres your outrage at that?

As regards Obama, I'm willing to give him a chance.  Even so, this reminds me of when Israel asked for a king, b/c "all the other countries" had kings.  (If all your friends jumped off a cliff, would you?  Sound familiar?) God gave them what they wanted.  Perhaps He's done just the same for us.

you're not alone ajg13......there are many of us that feel the same way.  i felt incredibly overwhelmed this morning, alone, like i was the only one who felt this way.  but i know i'm not.  the electoral vote per state represents how many seats and representatives that state has in the house and in the senate.  the popular vote gives you a better idea how many people were upposed to the president elect.  although the electoral votes appear to be a landslide, popular vote is much closer to the reality of the overall population...even though mccain was approx. 6% lower in the popular vote (46% to 52%......2% undecided or third party).  so obama was only in favor by 4%.......there are 48% of americans who are feeling the same way we are today.  good thing about this country.....we get to do this again in 4 years.  if things don't look good before our next election, that 4% will easily be won in favor of a new president.

Look - we need to move forward as a nation.  This country needs to get back on track.  We need to come together - regarless of your party affiliation and how you feel about the result of the election.  I am an Obama supporter, but I highly respect McCain.  He is a true American and I am even more confident of that after his speech last night.

Lets not make this a race issue (and I am speaking to the Obama supporters now) - but instead - that the President Elect put forth a stronger campaign and won many peoples votes, including whites and other races.  He did not win because he is black.  We need to respect eachother - regardless of race.  I am a white female and voted for Obama because of his view points on important issues.  My husband is a McCain supporter for the same reasons.  So - we can't always agree and we can't always win - but we do need to exist together in this world.

I find it amazing that the left doesn't remember how awful they acted for the past 8 years.  We are disappointed, but would never act out as the others have.  We have hope in the Lord.

Yeah--well, when the media makes them look like saints in this economic mess, and places the blame, unfairly, on one man's head--no one seems to remember.

Now we have a Democratic, liberal president coming in with an equally liberal Congress--where are the checks and balances now?  And just wait until another Supreme Court Justice is picked...youwch!  On the upside--in two years, when things aren't any better (or even worse), we can at least make changes with Congress.  The dems will have no one to blame but themselves now.  And the rest of the country will see for themselves they just got hoodwinked.

Already Obama and his "team" are starting to talk out the sides of their mouths - "well, we'll try to do the things we promised" (Their words this morning, not mine!)

I don't think either of them would have made good "Presidents" but at least I knew that John McCain would have made a great "Commander in Chief".  I hope that we survive the next four years - and I hope Barack Obama and his family can survive all their "untruths".

This election season was very disappointing, in part because of the media coverage which was very skewed toward one candidate.  The media's love affair with Barack Obama hurt our entire country--I believe a lot of key information was suppressed.  Not just  their lack of follow-through on the negative information--just look how much they nit-picked Sarah Palin and John McCain. But I was also disappointed they didn't discuss some of Barack Obama's own words (like how he wants to "bankrupt" the coal industry) and if he follows through with some of his ideals, how it will impact our country.  I think there was a lot of kool aid consumed before this election.

First of all MK--I'm not your "honey".  Second of all--I don't listen to Rush or Bill Cunningham. I listen to all sides and make up my OWN MIND. And I still dont think the media fairly investigated Obama's ties to ACORN.  Or looked carefully into Rev. Wright; How much influence will he have over Obama once he's in the White House?  And as far as watching and learning how our country should be run--yeah--just you wait until some foriegn power tries to test the US--your presidential choice isn't going to be able to charm his way out of that.

If Obama really was concerned about appealing to all Americans--why were three conservative media outlets tossed from covering his campaign?  What information were they afraid of being leaked?  Why was Fox News not allowed close to a voting location in Philadelphia--they were a legal distance and were getting threatened--and yet a Blank Panther was "guarding" the door???  Don't think that's a bit of voter intimidation?  Not a rumor--watched the coverage myself.  And yet, no one questioned that....

If there had actually been a scandal - a REAL one, not just a pretend one - concerning Obama and ACORN or Bill Ayers or any of the smear accusations used against this decent, hardworking man in this campaign, the media would have been all over it.

The charges were investigated long, long ago before Obama even ran for the U.S. Senate, and there was nothing to them. Nothing. Sorry you're not satisfied with that, but that's how it is. False, baseless, untrue.

On the campaign trail, many times, Obama was caught in more lies for one to count, but the media never said anything about it. Rather, they focus on the cost of Palin's wardrobe. Obama is the darling child of the liberal media. He has appeared on more magazines, newspapers, TV shows and websites than anyone in history. If he had to pay for all the publicity he received freely, it would have cost billions. All to put a man in the whitehouse who has never had to lead anything. I ran a tire shop for a year during college and that gives me more executive experience than the next president. Obama owes his election to the blacks, who would have voted for Satan if Satan were dark-skinned and running for office. Youth were brainwashed by the media into thinking Obama was the saviour. Fact is, Obama is inexperienced and when the time comes to make tough decisions, he'll go looking for the "present" button, just the same way he did in the senate. He's a coward who can talk a big game. I just hope America is still around in 4 years to vote him out. This time next year, I'm willing to bet that most Obama supporters will be regretting this decision. Never underestimate the power of stupid people in large numbers.

BUT isnt saying that "HE is not my president" just as unpatriotic!   It is aweful!  You should be ashamed!  And for the record... if you feel that way honestly, then you should LEAVE!   Honestly, we all had to deal with 8 years of not liking the POTUS, but we supported him, and stood strong as Americans!  I didnt pick up my family and move!     We need to stand together regardless and move forward!  All I see here is fear... it is very sad!

I happen to question the sincerity of a whole lot of flag waivers who think that is what makes them true Americans, and gives them the right to question another American's patriotism.

We will be watching you, Obama.  Everyone will be.  A perfect campaign does not mean a successful, unifying presidency.  The Republicans may be very grouchy today, but this election will NOT silence us.

Bush's beliefs were contrary to what I believed...not religious but in running the country. I survived, LOL.

The only difference between a Democratic and a Republican win...is that aprox. half the country will be p*ssed off when their side loses. ****** Personally, I hate the parties and candidates that preach such hate and division...and that is basically ALL of them. They want to get elected and get power....and anything goes, no matter how good a leader they would be running on their merits alone

We are ALL real Americans....no matter who wins.... At least I am..
